The Story Behind Nomi
Nomi (鑿) is the Japanese word for chisel.
A chisel begins as a raw piece of steel.
Through heat, pressure, and countless blows from the hammer, it slowly takes shape. It is refined, sharpened, fitted with a handle, and eventually placed in the hands of a craftsman who gives it purpose.
The story of Nomi Builders follows a similar path.
My career in construction wasn’t a straight line. I worked in different industries, learned from different people, built businesses, made mistakes, and spent years developing the skills and perspective that eventually brought me back to what I have always enjoyed most: creating things with my hands.
Along the way, a few people fundamentally changed the way I approach my work.
An early mentor and business partner taught me versatility and confidence. He could build almost anything, and working alongside him showed me what was possible through determination, problem solving, and a willingness to learn.
Later, a craftsman named Ron taught me something different: precision.
He taught me that building code is the minimum, not the goal. He taught me to think in sixteenths instead of inches and to understand the difference between getting something done and getting something right.
Those lessons stayed with me.
Why Nomi Builders
Nomi Builders represents the next stage of that journey.
The name also reflects my Japanese heritage and my growing appreciation for Japanese craftsmanship: the respect for materials, mastery of tools, attention to detail, and belief that becoming a craftsman is a lifelong process.
There is always another technique to learn. Another skill to improve. Another edge to sharpen.
The forging is done. Now comes the sharpening.
My responsibility is to continue refining my craft and to bring everything I have learned to each project I build.
How I Build
I believe that good construction starts long before the finished product.
It is in the framing that will eventually disappear behind drywall. The waterproofing nobody will see once the tile is installed. The flashing behind the siding. The preparation beneath the finish work.
Those details matter because craftsmanship isn't only about making something look good on the day the project is completed.
It is about building it correctly so it stays that way.
Nomi Builders approaches every project with four principles:
Precision. Honesty. Communication. Continual refinement.
I won't pretend there is only one way to build something. Construction is constantly evolving, and so is my craft. I continue investing in training, certifications, building science, and new techniques because I believe the person building your home should never stop learning.
Built for Living
I've always gotten satisfaction from creating things other people can experience.
Sometimes that's a shared meal with friends.
Sometimes it's growing a plant from a cutting.
Sometimes it's building a toy for my young son.
Sometimes it's taking a pile of lumber, stone, steel, or tile and turning it into a place where someone will spend part of their life.
Homes aren't museums.
They're where people cook dinner, raise kids, invite friends over, make messes, celebrate milestones and build memories.
That's what I'm ultimately building for.
Not simply something that photographs well, something that deserves to be lived in.
